color confidential with tobi fairley: warm hues

Posted on 17 May 2012 | 1 response

Q: Dear Tobi,

I loved your post here last month about bringing cool colors in to your home. However, I’m more fond of deep, rich colors. I guess I tend to lean more toward warm hues in general. Do you have any go-to colors that remind you of warmer landscapes?

Thanks!

Lauren, Jonesboro

A: Hi Lauren,

That’s a great question! Because warmer colors tend to make a bright statement and can have a bold impact, I generally use them as accents throughout a space.

(photography by Nancy Nolan)

For example, you might cover your chairs in a fiery shade of red, like the ones I used in this dining room. You could also paint an accent wall in a vibrant tangerine. Lamps and throw pillows are also a great way to bring in these colors without making a huge time or financial commitment. If you’re DIY-savvy, you could even paint a few pieces of furniture in one of these happy colors! The options are endless…

When it comes to selecting warm colors I love to look to nature. There are a ton of naturally occurring options in everything from sunsets to fall foliage. But to get back to your original question on which colors to use, I’ve selected a few that remind me of the warmer landscapes you mentioned. [All paint colors are Sherwin-Williams.]

If you want something that is a bit deeper and more rich you might try one of these…

Hopefully one of these colors will be just what you’re looking to use in your own home!

Happy Decorating!
-Tobi

container creativity

Posted on 1 May 2012 | No responses

Our garden guru Chris Olsen of Botanica Gardens is back, and this time he’s ready to help you rehab your containers for a summers-worth of gorgeous blooms.

My philosophy on decorating or accessorizing, whether it’s inside or outside, is to never limit yourself: be creative, and don’t just copy, rather expand on an idea. This golden rule applies even to container gardening. So many of us duplicate what our neighbors do in regards to their potted containers. Why do the same old juniper tree in the center with red geraniums? Spice it up!!!

Add texture and drama with dark rich burgundy cannas blended with variegated Abelia and some Profusion Zinnias. Why not plant variegated Soft Agave which screams “look at me,” and when mixed with the Wave Supertunia in vibrant colors of plum and soft lavender has a true “WOW” factor?

Even a blue glazed container with cool blue hues of Torenia will make any hot summer day feel just a few degrees cooler.
Don’t forget to combine your potted containers with other garden relics, such as this petrified log mounted on an iron stand.  Groupings of containers with other treasures makes for a personal and unique display.
For even more inspiration, check out this tropical poolside landscape, or take a look at how I deck out the containers at my own home.
Happy Gardening!

the big reveal: cara wilkerson’s kitchen makeover

Posted on 25 April 2012 | 8 responses

Last month, Cara Wilkerson of Live the Home Life wowed us with a first glimpse at one of her biggest and most impressive home improvements yet, her kitchen. This month, she’s back with the big reveal. One thing’s for sure: Cara’s new kitchen is cookin’!

April already?! My goodness how this year is flying by. With one mega DIY kitchen remodel underway in my neck of the woods, it’s no wonder the hands of time are ticking by with little notice. Last I left you, my kitchen had gone from dark and dated with few functioning appliances capable of toasting bread, let alone dishing out a full-fledged meal…

To much lighter and much brighter with reworked and refaced cabinets, new stainless appliances and countertops just itching to be replaced.

I won’t even try to lie to you. The day my countertops arrived was by far among the top 10 moments of my twenty-something life. Maybe I need to get out more, but seeing these quartz beauties march into my construction site was a definitely high point.

After a couple calls to plumbers and electricians to tie up a few loose ends, then came a white subway tile backsplash DIY-ed by yours truly.

Topped off with a few touchups and accessories and Phase 2 of DIY Kitchen Remodel 2012 was a wrap!

So now that Phase 2 is D-O-N-E, what’s next? Connecting the laundry room to the kitchen by knocking  through the separating wall and tiling the laundry room and kitchen floors. Check back soon as the madness continues!
