I make no bones about it. Two of my biggest loves in life are houses and before & after makeovers. So when I combined my two loves a little over a year ago and purchased my current house in need of much renovating, my motivation to make-old-new-again was kicked into high gear. I’m not just talking about whipping the old bones of the house into shape, but the furnishings to decorate my new place as well. With a lot of do-it-yourself elbow grease and thrift store/garage sale hunting to find the perfect pieces of furniture to rehab, my construction site has slowly begun to work its way out of 1962 and into the 21st century.

Let’s peruse a few before and afters shall we? With a little paint, polish and creative furniture flipping, these three rooms of my house have gone from drab to shabby-chic fab.

Kicking off our mini house tour with my living room complete with no overhead lighting, dreadful carpeting hiding hardwood floors and boring walls, this space definitely needed a little spice.

Next up, the dining room. Same ancient carpet and lackluster walls as the living room, but this room had a gem all of its own in the form of a giant wallpaper plantation scene.

Finally, we’ll wrap up our romp around my casa with the den. The original hardwoods were exposed when I moved in but had definitely seen better days. To top it off, the dark paneling, thick curtains and dim overhead lighting did little to boost the cheeriness of the space.

I have a bedroom with the double bed and furniture my parents bought me when I was nine. I have been married to the same man for almost 50 years and he loves it. I want to grow up. I would really love a makeover or make the Jennie Lind bed look more grown up.

Cara, I am a 50 year old woman and my parents are helping me raise my 13 year old son in Maumelle. We live with them and we have some major decorative and many obstacles beyond a DIY that we are capable of handling. Ex: arched ceiling with beams, weird sized walls and my moms fear of going beyond her 80s themed furniture and decorative pictures. We have absolutely no idea whAt to do. We would benefit greatly from your room makeover because we are at an impasse as to how to handle. I say paint but we we don’t know how to handle the space. It would bring joy to my moms life if she felt comfortable enough to start entertaining friends again. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Mary DeLoach. Big fan.

My husband and I down-sized into an empty nester home a few years ago. The living room is difficult. A black ventless fireplace (read UGLY) with a floor-to-ceiling faux-rock surround flanked by white built-in bookshelves is on one wall, yet it is not the focal wall. The opposite wall has a large off-center doorway. The focal wall has 3 windows which are not centered. The asymmetry is killing me! I cannot figure out what to do. I think design genius is called for.

I am getting divorced and I let her have most of the furniture, and all of the wall art, and now my house is kinda depressing. I have custody of our son, and I would love to come home to a place that is nice, and not so depressing!

  • Kristin Rodriguez says:

Cara is awesome at what she does!! I would love to have a room makeover by her!! I just got engaged and this would be an awesome start to my new life!!

  • Jessica says:

We recently bought a home that is in need of everything! After demo’ing to the studs we are ready for the decorating step! There is a fabulous downstairs den that screams potential but I have decorator’s block. I need her help!

  • delia says:

I don’t have a very convincing reason for wanting the virtual makeover, but I do have a simple living room that has great potential to be completely transformed!

  • Lisa Combs says:

I would love to have help with my house! We just moved into a 1963 ranch style house with an extremely challenging living room. Had just gotten the last house the way we wanted it and then moved to the other side of the country to start again.

  • Janie Kehler says:

I love repurposing!!! It has become a way of life for me and my decorating, as I am a single mom of two. I work two jobs to keep both my teenagers’ cars filled with gas…LOL! We recently moved into a smaller home, and have not really had the time or money to devote to “decorating” the kids’ rooms. While functional, I would love to give them some spunk in their space!!!

  • Tracie says:

Absolutely love her style of decorating! We just moved into a much smaller home and need a total revamp of the bedroom. I would be so honored and excited to win!

  • Gwynne says:

Love your site. Desperately need ideas in the best way to take out a wall to make one large living area, but still be able to close off part for my work.

  • Robin Guadagnini says:

Oh wow…what gorgeous rooms!!! I would love some help in making our rooms work and function and be gorgeous! I got married for the first time (at age 46) four years ago and we “merged” our furnishings and I have been working on the making the house a home. Would love some help!

    Thank you for consideration!

  • frann fuller says:

Beautiful rooms! I would love to have some assistance in updating our home. Work 12hour days and don’t have much enthusiasm left when I get home! Love the rooms you have done on this page!

  • Holy moly! I am so excited to see all of the entries. Can’t wait to find out who the winner is!

  • Deirdre says:

My living room needs a design overhaul. It has boring white walls, is full of kiddie toys, and most importantly, doesn’t reflect who I am.

  • Pam Fortner says:

Would love to have a makeover for one of my rooms! As a single mom, I don’t think I will ever have the time or money to do it myself!

  • Leytine Henry says:

Help! I am stuck in a time-warp! Need a makeover like a baby need kissing!

  • Nelda Cooper says:

My mother Janice Bissett deserves this room makeover because she is going through a divorce after 43 years of marriage and also has taken on the responsibility of moving her mother down close to her to care for her. What is ironic is that she brought back with her mother her great grandmothers china hutch in separate need of restoration.

  • Danielle Smith says:

    Cara,

I love your blog and all of your designs! I’m amazed at how you take simple things and turn a room into a beautiful and eclectic space. I just bought my first house this year and I need major help! I know that your ideas and finishing touches would make my house feel like a home!

  • Samantha Coker says:

I so need a room makeover! I moved into this house about a year and a half ago and haven’t hung any of my pictures. They are all still leaning against the wall. My teenagers and I would be thrilled to have the house decorated again.

  • Shawn Clark says:

Omg, I would soooo love that – our house is in transition, just put in hardwood floors in 2 rooms, and refinished the rest. I am now frozen, and with random stuff from 30 years is scattered around, and I’m so afraid of making a mistake, I don’t do anything. My family is begging, pick us, pick us – so we can make our house a home again.

    fingers crossed!!!

  • Terry Vo says:

    Hi Cara!

Thank you so much for doing this and wanting to changing someone’s life! You have such amazing talent and I am so excited that you will be able to make someone’s space into something unique and special.

My makeover request is not for me but for my parents. They came over to the States in the 80′s and have always put their children first. They have never done anything for themselves until recent (now that all five children are out of the house and graduated from college). They just moved into their dream house but need a bit of assistance with decorating and turning it into a home. I live in Nashville so I am not able to come home often enough to help furniture shop, etc. I would love it if you could do a makeover for one of their rooms. I know that it would be the biggest surprise they have received and know that it would mean the world to them.

    Thank you for your consideration!

  • Janet says:

I already registered but was thinking about it and wanted to see if I can register again but under my moms name. As you know she lives In the downstairs at my house and since she is pretty much confined to the house she could really use a cara makeover more than me.

  • Patty says:

Love the before and after pictures. What a blessing this would be for the winner of the giveaway. Thanks

  • Kellye Simmons says:

I actually have two options at my house. I have a son that needs to move on up to tween bedroom and I have some great starter pieces but no clear vision for the rest. OR I have a master bedroom that is newly repainted and ready for some homemade furniture…like an eight foot tall tufted headboard…but that’s where my creativity ends and your’s can step in. I need your help. You know it would be so fun!
