cara wilkerson’s makeover giveaway revealed!
Posted on 25 January 2012
Do you remember this giveaway? At Home blog contributor Cara Wilkerson (of Live the Home Life) offered to give one lucky reader a virtual room makeover, and the entries poured in! We randomly selected one lucky winner, and Cara quickly got to work reimagining the outdated space as a comfortable place for entertaining. Read on for the results!
When Mary, the winner of At Home in Arkansas magazine’s recent virtual room & furniture makeover giveaway (by yours truly), sent photos of her living room my way, I was pumped to get busy crafting a game plan for her space. With large walls and tall ceilings, I just knew this living room could be whipped into shape in no time.
Take a look at Mary’s official entry and before shots below…
Cara, I am a 50-year-old woman and my parents are helping me raise my 13-year-old-son in Maumelle. We live with them and we have some major decorative obstacles. Ex: Arched ceiling with beams, weird sized walls and my mom’s fear of going beyond her 80s-themed furniture and decorative pictures. We have absolutely no idea what to do. We would benefit greatly from your room makeover because we are at an impasse as to how to handle this space. It would bring joy to my mom’s life if she felt comfortable enough to start entertaining friends again. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Mary. Big fan.
Right off the bat, Mary let me know that her favorite colors were a cool gray and latte mocha. She already had a neutral tan leather sofa to work with, a dark toned paisley chair and grandfather clock that she wanted to include in the room redesign. With Mary’s input I was ready to create a killer neutral virtual makeover for her space that would be warm and inviting to guests but also cozy and functional for everyday living.
Keeping Mary’s color preferences in mind, I went with a light grey wall color with accents of latte, steely blue, navy and gold. Light curtain panels not only help frame the windows but allow in plenty of natural light while a framed print collage serves as an inexpensive way to draw the eye to the tall vaulted ceilings. Topped off with a few accessories including a print for above the fireplace, throw pillows to spice up the sofa and a side-table lamp, Mary’s room was rolling right along the virtual makeover express way.

Love the neutral palette with just enough mix of color and pattern to keep things fresh. Great ideas Cara, thanks for helping out an At Home reader!
