fresh patterns + a giveaway
Posted on 10 January 2012
Our January/February issue is all about freshening up your home, whether that means organizing a space or adding a new twist with color, fabrics or furnishings. One of my very favorite ideas in this issue was using pattern in neutral rooms as a way of adding a current fabric and color in a subtle way. Designer Jim Howard mastered this look in this charming open kitchen with adjacent sitting and breakfast areas in a Little Rock home.
Notice how the draperies, rugs and pillows all have graphic patterns that add a punch in the neutral space?
Plus that charming scalloped detail on the drapery valance makes them unique and adds just one more level of intriguing detail. The same concept applies to the kitchen window valance below.

Sure Fit is offering four of these plaid dining chair slipcovers (they come in chocolate and black as well) to one lucky At Home blog reader. Simply leave a comment telling us what refreshing you have in mind for your rooms, and you’ll be entered to win.

i make alot of my own furniture, or repaint it, stain it, shabby chic it, antique it etc. i buy most of my stuff at yard sales, second hand stores or hand me downs. I wish i had all the money in the world to buy new furniture, but my space is a lovely expression of my flair for giving new life to old….that being said, fresh NEW slip covers would compliment my style and make me feel rewarded for decorating on a small budget all my life!
Thanks Michelle! We’d love to have you send pics of some of the furniture/rooms you’ve refreshed. dcarroll@athomearkansas. your projects sound great.
I love “At Home” and I love the slipcovers—what a great way to update a room!!
My kids tv room needs a refreshing new look for 2012.
beautiful rooms….sending some sunshine to cheer you up….
Thanks for the sunshine Joanne
I think the one thing that I have desired most in life is to have kitchen cabinets and an island in my kitchen. In 2005 we purchased an older double wide. We gutted the inside and the guys put beams in down the middle at the front of the home so that we could have an “open” living area – kitchen, dining and living room combo. The place was rewired, and progress started happening and then my husband became ill and passed away – now I have bases of cabinets he built without doors – someday, my dream will be to have that kitchen finished.
We hope your kitchen dream comes true too Kelli!
With all Christmas decorations put away…..now is the time to freshen the whole house. I do a thoroughly vacuuming….of all carpet and furniture….flipping cushions over, adding some new pillows and throws…..redoing the fireplace mantel with something new…..not new, but coming from anther room…..also moving some furniture around, adding a mirror where one had not been………….its like I have a new look on a new year……………yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Send pics, Valery, would love to see your redo! dcarroll@athomearkansas.com
For my living room, I have purchased a cool duvet cover in a cream and teal floral swedish print that will be split into 2 panels. I’m planning on painting the walls a cream color and the fireplace a charcoal gray to complement the stone in front of it. I’m excited about the possibilities! I also will have to paint the tall round end table to bring the room together. Not sure yet on the color, maybe a black or even an orange to liven up the space. Yes, it may sound off-beat but I have made a storyboard already and I think it can be an amazing space!
SO charming! Send photos Jennifer, we’d love to see your storyboard and your work. dcarroll@athomearkansas.com
My living room needs to be completed- trim out the drapes, recover two chairs(love plaid, by the way!) and freshen with new pillows. Then there’s the kitchen, my room,..
I guess I’m in to domino decorating, one after another!
One room after another is a great way to get things done! You get the flow of the spaces going. Good luck and send us some pics: dcarroll@athomearkansas.com
I recently moved to LIttle Rock to a quaint, but tiny apartment. The last thing on my to-do list is to find furniture for a dining space. I would LOVE to have a set of slipcovered chairs to make the place feel like home!
I love this fresh look! It inspires me! I would also like to see Michelle’s furniture new looks! When I use my furniture to stage a model home, remove it, then use it again, I also make slipcovers to create a new look. Great article idea!
Lorie
I need a makeover in my dining room. These covers would be a start.
Oh,
so beautiful!!!!
Simone
I have been looking at slip covers for my dining room chairs. I love these!
The cushions (seat & seat back) on my kitchen/breakfast area chairs really need a new look! Sure could use these.Love “At Home”!
After taking down all our holiday decorations, it seems our home needs a little refreshing. I enjoy your magazine and the ideas I glean from it!
Every January I feel the need to change things up a bit. New slipcovers sounds like a great idea. Thanks
I love your ideas..my dining chairs need a new look. This would be an excellent fix to have slipcovers. All your rooms are so refreshing. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Caroline!
Just wrote lengthy remarks about latest “freshening” of family room to freshen & lighten up a dark, cave-like room on my face book wall! Adjacent dining area could certainly use a set of new chair covers in new color scheme to freshen up that area as well. Sure hope I win!
Love the idea in AT Home in AR magazine every month. Thanks,
Leslie
I just remodeled my kitchen after 10 years of owning my 36 year old home. The new entry and casual dining area was just finished yesterday. I have been searching websites for the perfect rug to tie in some old and some new pieces and thought I should see what At Home Arkansas was featuring. I have never responded to one of these but when I saw the same parsons chairs that I have, I thought why not! I am trying to integrate some of the new ikat patterns to introduce a new look so if you have any resource suggestions please send them my way.
Thanks Dee! Congrats on your remodel, and we’ll be sure to keep showing inspiration.
I have every copy of At Home since it first came out. I look in the most recents and past issues for inspiration on my designs all the time. The slipcovered chairs are perfect for the brightening up I’ve been working on recently! How fun!
Every issue! Wow, we love that
Thanks Colleen.
I’m getting so much inspiration for my new home from At Home. I recently moved here (back home to Arkansas) from Mississippi. So happy to be back, but this is a first for me to have a new home and needing to decorate. I love the clean, simple, comfortable, homey, neutral look. These slipcovers would be perfect for my dining room. I think they would give the table the “something” I feel is missing. Thanks for sharing and the opportunity. Crossing fingers!
Slipcovers are a great way to change a look in a room.
I love this space. I would tweak it a bit by introducing black. Black is back!! I have a black painted dining room table that always looks stunning no matter what time of year. I have red leather parson chairs which would look great with the black plain slip covers by Surefit. I am keeping my fingers crossed I am the random winner!!
Like other readers, I also had to downsize quite a bit in order to save on my nonprofit salary. However, I knew that didn’t mean that I would be forced to part with all my favorite pieces.
Luckily, I was able to keep my dining room table and chairs; they’re the only family heirloom that got to stay in the new space. My chairs would look posh-itively chic donning these new duds!
I am in the process of painting and decorating both my grown daughters rooms. Hoping their bathroom will go with the colors I have chosen for paint and bedspreads. Wish me luck.
As soon as I get a signed leased, I can’t wait to finish painting what was started before I moved in here and changing some of the colors I don’t like. Don’t know what I will do with Slipcovers if I win, I don’t have chairs to fit them, and its one of the many thing my Custom Drapery Workman specializes in. Guess I can save them till Christmas and give to someone who can use them, maybe better yet, I could donate them to someone!!!
Thanks for listening to my ramblings,
Cat
