Apparently robin’s egg blue and black/white patterns were a match made in design heaven. Cynthia Rowley’s sleek and chic Spring 2009 collection featured this ladylike number, complete with a blue sheath dress and black/white sandals. And Melinda Dodson of MD Designs, who had collaborated with interior designer Andrea Brooks on the rest of the home, upped the cottage-chic factor in this El Dorado kitchen using similar color ways. To both we say, “Bravo!”

Summer’s nearly over but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a summery palette of fresh colors year-round, especially if you happen to have a charming cottage-style dining room like this, by interior designer RaeLynn Callaway.

Sunlight coming in through French doors plays up bright white accents, while soft greens and blues invoke images of blue skies, green grass and warm, sunny mornings. The overall effect is simple, understated and just plain cozy.
A leisurely Saturday morning breakfast is certainly the order of the day, but the roomy central table would just as easily accommodate a larger group of friends visiting for a Friday-night dinner. Really, what more could you ask for in a dining room?

Yesterday marked the highly anticipated release of Julie and Julia, starring Meryl Streep as iconic chef Julia Child and Amy Adams as Julie Powell, a woman who aspires to cook all 524 recipes from Child’s cookbook while blogging about it.
Not surprisingly, the film serves up some helpful tidbits on kitchen design, with Child’s goal being to create an unfussy, beautiful kitchen that didn’t give in to fads and catered to her needs. In her famous kitchen in Cambridge, Mass. (which is now on exhibit at the Smithsonian), the 6′2″ chef had the maple countertops raised two inches to accommodate her height. For better organization, she traced the outline of her pots and other utensils where they hung on peg boards for easy accessibility. And her husband, Paul, chose the blue and green color scheme to reflect Julia’s bright personality. As Mrs. Child herself explained, “We intended to make it both practical and beautiful, a working laboratory as well as a living and dining room.” Decades later, this is still good advice.

I recently had a little road trip down Highway 65 South and stopped by Paul Michael Company in Lake Village. They have a huge showroom filled with all kinds of furniture, decorative accessories, canvas artwork, rugs and much more. I was just amazed at their selection and prices. They have something for every home. One thing that really caught my eye were these great cutting boards. They are so unique and are made in all sizes. The prices are great too! Some are made with stripes and others with great iron handles. I love to cook, so I always have a cutting board out on the kitchen counter. What kitchen wouldn’t look great with one of these sitting out?! I’ve got to schedule another trip soon! Paul Michael Company has three locations in the south. Their Arkansas store is located on Highway 65 South in Lake Village, 800-732-3722.
