chris olsen’s quartz centerpiece how-to

Posted on 4 April 2012 | No responses

Bring the outdoors in with this fun project from none other than garden guru Chris Olsen of Botanica Gardens! He’s puttin’ on the glitz with a quartz centerpiece how-to, which would look lovely as a fancy dinner party focal point, don’t you think?
Inexpensive tealight candle holders in an array of summer colors become a mosaic piece of art for any tablescape. Each one of these tealights cost only 99 cents. Your can find such tealights at most craft stores and even places like Crate & Barrel, as I did here. Let your imagination go wild and have fun with your design. The best part is that you can reuse these glass marvels for years to come whether inside or outside. The natural crystal bowl in the center is made from crystals you can find right here in Arkansas. You can create this look for little cash.

You will need:

Assorted small quartz crystals (available at hobby and rock shops and on the Internet)
Household adhesive sealant (use sealant that is heat tolerant…just sayin’)
Clear bowl or drinking glass (votive holder)

Here’s How:

1.  Clean glass and cover work surface.

2.  Separate crystals in piles by size.

3.  Apply a generous amount of sealant to bottom of crystal.  Starting at the bottom of the bowl, adhere larger crystals around glass.

4.  Continue layering crystals around glass, using smaller sizes as you get closer to top.  About 2″ from top of glass, crystals will be upright when glued.

5.  Allow to dry at least 24 hours before using with a candle if you made a votive.

cooking up color in the kitchen

Posted on 3 April 2012 | 2 responses

Our April color issue is out! We had such a fun month photographing and writing about these colorful places, including this color blocked kitchen in Conway, at The Village at Hendrix, in a home built by Bret Franks Construction.

It’s the home of Melanie and Bill Siegel, and we’re smitten by the colorful tile backsplash from Clayhaus Ceramics. Sherwin-Williams’ Mindful Gray coats the cabinets, with Creamy on the ceiling and trim. Counters are Caesarstone Organic White; the sink is from Whitehaus, with a Danze faucet. Hudson Valley Independence pendant lights hang above the island, and a McCoy fixture from Rejuvenation hangs above the sink. Knobs and drawer pulls are from etsy.com.

We think the Siegels chose a terrific mix of items–stylish, unique, creative…
And a great place to get cookin’. You can see more and read the full story here.

colorful collecting and a giveaway!

Posted on 29 March 2012 | 24 responses

We’re celebrating color on the At Home blog, as we welcome spring with our All About Color issue for April. And to help you celebrate too, we have a book giveaway!

If you’re reading us regularly, you know we went on an antiquing tour with author and entertaining expert Kathryn Greeley, who is a true-blue aficionado of flow blue china.

And we parlayed those lessons learned into a feature in our April issue, all about collecting flow blue and featuring Kathryn’s tabletop favorites…

with strikingly unique patterns and slight variances in color, all of which Kathryn says “live graciously together on a tabletop.”

The character and uniqueness captured our attention too…

and we’d love to hear how you’d work flow blue into your own tabletop decor.

So leave a comment for us with your ideas, or any other tidbits you’d like to pass along, and we’ll enter you in the drawing to win Kathryn’s book, a treasure trove of entertaining and collecting inspiration.

A winner will be selected randomly on April 5th. We can’t wait to hear your ideas!

It is really, truly, finally officially spring, even though it’s felt like spring for some time now. Since the season is rushing by this year, for today’s Room of the Week, let’s appreciate a few favorite sitting rooms, ideal spots for soaking in sun, enjoying the views of the blooms and the sounds of the birds. Get your iced tea and magazine ready and let’s find a few perches.
