As our August Family Home’s issue segues into our September Kitchen & Bath issue, soon to be on newsstand and in your mailbox (you do subscribe, right?)…

we thought we’d offer a bonus room: a web-exclusive photo of the kitchen from Jennifer and Michael Green’s Fayetteville home, designed by Tobi Fairley, that we featured in our Family Homes issue.

When the Greens purchased their home, the kitchen was already complete. Fairley enhanced the wood cabinetry with paint and accessories that play up the colors used in other parts of the house.

My favorite element is the graphic impact Tobi added with Bunny Rabbit Cookie Jars by Momoyo Torimitsu for Cerealart.

Colorfully fun, especially for a family with three kids. Just think of all the cookies they could hold…

Every location we shoot generally has a bonus picture…something that was extra fun to style, an idea we loved, an angle that turned out better than expected. In our August Family Homes issue, there were lots of them, thanks to the combination of families/kids and great homes. A few personal favorites:

Think of all the variables that had to come together on this one…it’s a garden, photographed in the summer, which means we had to be on site at about 7 a.m. to get this soft, pretty light. The very-accommodating Redfield family has woken their two sons and they’re ready to swim in the early morning hours. And then, we want them to all interact, so mom is throwing a football, one son is catching it, another is jumping off the diving board, and photographer Rett Peek manages to capture it all. Me, I was standing alongside and clapping at how well it all went. The rest of the shoot was equally entertaining.

We love to photograph kids in their own rooms, and two-year-old Sterling Green with her cute curly hair seemed a perfect fit for her paisley-inspired space, by designer Tobi Fairley. Sterling’s mom Jennifer sat her up on the daybed and handed her a book, and we all figured we were in for some standard two-year-old wriggling around. Instead, she sat in the perfect spot and started quietly looking at the book, and photographer Nancy Nolan was intuitive enough to quickly start snapping away. Eventually, Sterling wandered off, and we captured that too.

Likewise, when we photographed Ava and Hayden Schueck’s room, we hoped to capture them doing what they like best. When Nancy Nolan asked them if they wanted to jump on their beds, one twin was eager to oblige, the other…decided it was time to read. We loved it! A chance for kids to be kids.

Today’s pick: a room that I kept thinking about after our photo shoot, because it was so pretty and fun, a perfect perch for a girl of any age.

It belongs to Millie, a charming three year old, and was designed by Little Rock-based designer Tobi Fairley. Millie and her family’s house are a part of our August Family Homes issues, and when I was there for the photo shoot, I kept looking at this room and thinking how much my own daughter (now 14) would enjoy it, and how much I would have enjoyed it as a girl-teenager-young adult as well.

For one, it contains some of my favorite lines: Cole & Son wallpaper, Designers Guild fabrics, an American Leather bed, and Mies van der Rohe ottomans from Soho Modern. All classics in my book, and a great mix–from mid-century modern to the wildly fun prints for which Designers Guild is known.

I can imagine little Millie using elements of this room for years to come–that bed and those ottomans could even look fabulous in a post-college apartment. Fun, colorful, kid-friendly, yet classic enough to last for years, all the elements that make for a great kids’ room.

July has been a month of contests. First there was our Arkansas’ Best contest, and all the fun of working with those winners (several of them screamed when they found out they won…it was like working for Publishers Clearing House for a day, we loved it!!).

And the last two weeks, I’ve been judging entries for the What Inspires You? blog contest.

Entrants chose a favorite visual and then described in 100 words or less why it inspired them. As you can imagine, the photos were incredibly diverse—from a horny toad to lots of natural vistas to self portraits to technology to celebrities… (isn’t this photo grand?)

The other judges and I have rounded up our favorite 150 entries and future blog challenges and judging will follow (and the winner will ultimately win $10,000 and a fab trip to Paris…sigh, but I’ll live vicariously through their blog posts—and I’ll update you too).

In the meantime, I thought you might like to take a peek at some of the visuals I personally found the most inspiring. (And because I am through and through a home design editor, they were usually homes and gardens)

Summer heat usually makes me want to stay out of the kitchen (send the hubby off to the hot grill while I toss a chilled salad!), but this lake view and a breeze could entice me to spend a little more time on food prep. Owners Chip and Susan Chambers (Chip’s a very talented architect and part of Chambers & Soule Design Builders) built this guest house on Lake Windsor in Bella Vista as a family gathering place.

Family breakfast would be a treat, sipping coffee, nibbling a croissant…

And after breakfast, heading over to the boat house for a cruise around the lake.

Yes, we like this place so much we’ve visited twice, photographing the kitchen for this year’s waterfront homes issues in June.

And the exterior and boat house for last year’s July issue. Take a peek at how lovely this house is on the outside too.
